ACADEMICS - OVERVIEW

   Academic Stream
At VIT, semester pattern is followed. An academic year consists of two semesters. The Fall (Odd) Semester begins in June and the Winter (Even) Semester in December. The academic schedule mentioned in the academic calendar will be strictly followed.

   Classroom Teaching
Qualified faculty members assigned with various theory subjects prepare course plans using the standard format provided by the institute with emphasis on 'learning' of the students. The instructional or lecture delivery of the faculty will be through a set of Educational Technology / Tools opted by the faculty. The lectures lay emphasis on the following:
  • Knowledge content (topics in the curriculum)
  • Utility value - application in real life
  • Latest developments
The classroom sessions will be interactive and will encourage the students to think independently and inspire their creativity. The faculty will ensure that the students in the class have assimilated the content projected. High level of discipline will be maintained in the classroom. The faculty members are empowered to curb any disturbance and ensure that the time is used fruitfully. To this effect, students are expected to maintain decorum and refrain from causing any disturbance in the classroom. Camera cell phones are prohibited in the campus. Students are advised not to carry cell phones to the classrooms and laboratories.

Classroom instructions may be supplemented by students' presentations and / or guest lectures by external/internal experts.

Attendance will be taken by the faculty concerned at the beginning of each session. All the classes will begin on time and the students coming late will not be given attendance.
   Laboratory Classes
Laboratory sessions are given utmost importance at VIT. All the students are expected to be regular and learn the practical aspects of the subject and develop the necessary skills to become professionals.

In order to facilitate interaction among the students and develop team spirit, the students are expected to carry out experiments in groups. The students should come prepared for each laboratory class. The students are expected to:
  • Read and understand the theory behind the experiment in advance
  • Come to the lab in time with prescribed Dress Code for the lab and
  • Bring the observation note book
The variables in the experiment might be given differently for different batches and hence it is expected that the students should complete' all aspects of experiment before leaving the lab. The record of the experiment written neatly in the laboratory record should be submitted in the subsequent class which will be evaluated by the faculty on the same day and returned to the students. Students who have not submitted their records and those who come late to the lab class will lose their attendance. The students are expected to adhere to the safety precautions prescribed for the lab. In case of any breakage of equipment due to carelessness of the students, the students concerned will be fined. Any malpractice done by the students will result in disciplinary action.

All the experiments in the laboratories are updated and obsolete ones are removed regularly. The students are expected to keep pace with the technological developments and equip themselves with the latest in the field. Each student is expected to learn the experiments and train himself / herself to do the experiment individually during examination.

   Assignments / Mini Projects
Students are continuously assessed throughout the course and due weight-age for this is given in the final assessment. Assignments / Mini Projects / Seminars by students form part of continuous evaluation for both theory as well as lab classes. Faculty members inform the students about the topics and due dates for the assignment / mini project / seminar well in advance and motivate the students to complete in time. Evaluation for these will be based on the following:
  • Originality
  • Creative Ideas
  • Research Papers Referred
  • Presentation Skills
  • Technical Contents
Students doing exemplary mini projects, preferably working models will be suitably rewarded with additional awards / prizes.
   Industrial Training
All the B.Tech. students should undergo industrial training for a period of 6 weeks and should complete before the starting of VI semester classes. The training may be split into slots. Students may undertake training during their 2nd year summer vacation onwards. It is left to the discretion of the Directors concerned to finalize the slots of training.
  • The training may be arranged by the Schools concerned, PAT at VIT or by the students themselves.

  • Whatever be the mode of approach, the consent letter from the industry should be available with the Director. The letter should be preferably typed in the letterhead of the company. To the extent possible, e-mail confirmations may be avoided.

  • Candidates should leave with the Director, the contact addresses and phone numbers during the period of industrial training.

  • The Director shall arrange at least one or two faculty members to visit the industries where the students are undergoing training and check whether the training is being carried out with all seriousness.

  • All the students should follow the rules and regulations of the industry where they are taking training and strive to learn the practical aspects of engineering during training.

  • A diary has to be maintained by the student during the training period. A Common Industrial training diary is available and the students have to buy and use the same and submit to the Director at the end of the training.

  • A training certificate has to be produced by the student to the Director indicating the duration, broad areas covered, etc. The certificate should be given in the company letterhead duly signed by the Officer In-charge of the training, not below the cadre of Manager. This is in addition to the certificate provided in the back inside cover of the printed training diary.

  • The certificate thus produced will be countersigned by the Director and maintained in the School.

  • Based on the diary maintained by the students, they have to prepare a detailed report and submit the same in the form of a booklet.

  • The contents of the INDUSTRIAL TRAINING REPORT should be as follows:
    • Introduction
    • About the Industry
    • Design features learnt
    • Production features learnt
    • Managerial/Human skills acquired
    • Conclusion
The report may contain information in 30 to 40 pages. The preparation of the report may be as per the guidelines given for the preparation of project report / thesis.

  • The industrial training report has to be submitted to the respective Directors.

  • A presentation by each candidate will be arranged by the School. The candidate has to present the training experiences with OHP Slides or Power-Point Presentation.

  • The Director will form a committee of 3 faculty members to sit through the presentations and evaluate the industrial training programme of the candidate and award marks for 100.

  • An evaluation report will be sent to the Controller of Examinations as it carries credits.

   Project Work
  • The projects can be done in-house (VIT campus) or in any industry. It is preferred that students take up in-house projects and fabricate working models which have a long-lasting value for the Institute and give a sense of satisfaction to the students. However, when a student is particular in doing the project in an industry, he/she can do so after getting the prior approval from the Director.

  • If the project is done in an industry, there should be an External Guide in the industry where the project is being done.

  • The Internal Guide will visit the project site at least once during the course of the project. The Internal Guide should also have constant interaction with the External Guide and monitor the progress of the student.

  • Students have to finalize their project title, the guide, their batch mates, the place of work and the schedule of work along with 'Gantt Chart' (activity chart) and submit to the Director by the end of the 6th semester.

  • A project Diary will have to be maintained by every student. The project work is intended to inculcate the following in the students.
    • Project planning & scheduling skills (Project Management)
    • Practical experience
    • Team working
    • Creativity and research orientation
    • Report writing skills
The project Guides would ensure that the students are trained well in the above competencies.

  • Final Year B. Tech. project work may be done individually or in a group not exceeding 4 students.

  • Considering the intellectual capacity and creativity of the students of VIT, it is suggested that the students aim for patentable projects. They shall ensure that there is research component in every project.

  • There should be continuous evaluation of the students' performance in the project work too. There will be 3 Project Reviews conducted during the project period. During the project review, the students will be evaluated on the following:

    Criteria Reference Weightage
    The Presentation Skill
The Progress made as per the plan
Knowledge gained on the subject of the project
    From presentation of the student
Compare with the schedule given and the work completed
    By conducting viva-voce
    30%
    30%
    40%

  • The review dates and schedule would be informed well in advance (a minimum of 20 days).

  • Each student has to submit Project Review Reports and Final Project Report individually highlighting his specific contribution to the Project Work.

  • Project review and evaluation will be jointly done by the Project Guide, the Project Co-ordinator and the Director.

  • The final viva-voce will be conducted as per the schedule given by the Controller of Examinations. The evaluation during the final viva-voce will be done by the external examiners appointed by the Controller of Examinations.
