Centre for Bio Separation Technology (CBST)

A hard-core technology centre, CBST was established at a cost of Rs. 27 millions with the help of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi, which has recognized "Protein Separation" as a high priority research area. Projected by the DST as a 'National Facility' for R&D and Training, the centre caters to postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

One of the missions of the CBST is to train young Indian scientists and disseminate knowledge in the field of Bio Separation Technology, which is the limiting factor in value-added biomolecules production. To satiate this, CBST offers training in value-added biomolecules production including protein expression, production of monoclonal antibodies and other bioactive molecules and their purification.

Development of holistic viable technologies at this Centre for the efficient separation of biomolecules (proteins, peptides, DNA, etc.), particularly with relevance to pharmaceuticals and extension of these technologies to clinical biochemistry applications, is a unique feature in the Indian context. The Centre focuses particularly on biotechnology- based healthcare molecules - both proteins and small molecules from natural extracts. In the field of therapeutic proteins, a "gene-to-vial" approach with a turnkey system for the pharmaceutical industry is the contribution of the centre, with unique capabilities in protein expression, purification and validation.

Some of the distinct features of the Centre are its facility for mammalian cell culture work, monoclonal antibody production and recombinant protein expression. The Centre aims to be world-class through innovative research approaches, state-of-the-art technologies and multidisciplinary approaches, research and training.

Acknowledging its high-level expertise and the potential, CBST has been granted funding for "Improved Production and Processing of the Therapeutic Proteins" to the tune of Rs. 22 millions. This is the first funding from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, to VIT University.

Thanks to the efficient performance of the CBST, many industries, both national and international, are entrusting the Centre with contract research works. The progress is periodically evaluated and the industries are showing satisfaction. The Centre functions under the Directorship of Prof. M.A. Vijayalakshmi, who has more than 30 years of expertise in the field of separation science technology. She is also the Director of Molecular Interactions and Separations Technology Labs at UTC, France. With her efforts the Centre has established an extensive network with both national and international experts, thus allowing students and young scientists to get trained in several world-renowned laboratories
