PhD Admissions at VIT: VITREE 2026 (July Session) - Ph.D., Direct Ph.D. and Deep Tech Programmes

VIT has the record of publishing maximum number of SCOPUS Indexed Research Journal papers, among Indian Universities, overtaking all the premier institutions. VIT has also completed 3 cycles of NAAC accreditation and has been rated as an “A++” grade institution. In addition, VIT also has obtained the coveted ABET accreditation by US agency.
Amidst the numerous courses offered by VIT, there are a few that cater to the research domain as well.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
Ph.D.
Selection based on the performance in the VITREE score, PG Degree marks, Research proposal and Personal Interview. Candidates, who fulfil the eligibility criteria prescribed, shall appear for VITREE, a Computer Based Test for 2 hours at their test venue of choice. Change of Venue Campus, date of Interview or program will not be permitted. The question paper will have 100 MCQs (Technical – 70 questions; English communication skills – 15 questions; Statistics and probability – 15 questions)
The shortlisted candidates should appear for a personal interview and the selected candidates will be intimated
Direct-Ph.D.
Selection based on the performance in the VITREE score, B.E. / B.Tech. Degree marks, Research proposal and Personal Interview. Candidates, who fulfil the eligibility criteria prescribed, shall appear for VITREE a Computer Based Test for 2 hours at their test venue of choice. Change of Venue Campus, date of Interview or program will not be permitted. The question paper will have 100 MCQs (Technical – 80 questions; English communication skills – 20 questions)
The shortlisted candidates should appear for a personal interview and the selected can- didates will be intimated

Frequently Asked Questions
VITREE stands for VIT Research Entrance Examination. It is the mandatory Computer-Based Test for admission to Ph.D., Direct Ph.D. and Ph.D. in Deep Technology programmes at VIT.
VITREE is conducted for two sessions per year: July and January. This page covers the July 2026 session. January 2026 session results have already been declared.
The Ph.D. requires a postgraduate (Master’s) degree for entry. The Direct Ph.D. allows B.E./B.Tech. graduates with First Class to bypass a separate Master’s degree and proceed directly to doctoral research, on a full-time basis only.
The Ph.D. in Deep Technology is a Chancellor Fellowship doctoral programme for research in nationally strategic deep-tech domains. It requires a separate application template and is only available as Internal Full Time.
VITREE is a 2-hour Computer-Based Test with 100 MCQs. For Ph.D.: 70 Technical, 15 English Communication, 15 Statistics and Probability. For Direct Ph.D.: 80 Technical and 20 English Communication.
VIT Vellore, VIT Chennai, VIT-AP and VIT-Bhopal. IFT (Internal Full Time) is available at all four. EPT (External Part Time) is available only at VIT-Bhopal, in both Teacher and Industry sub-categories.
Yes. External Part Time (EPT) categories at VIT-Bhopal are open to teachers employed at recognised institutions (EPT-Teachers) and professionals employed in industry or research organisations (EPT-Industry).
A B.E. or B.Tech. degree with First Class from a recognised university. Candidates do not need a Master’s degree but must apply for Internal Full Time only.
Yes. All candidates must submit a two-page research proposal at the time of application, using the prescribed template: one template for Ph.D. and Direct Ph.D., and a separate template for the Deep Technology Chancellor Fellowship programme.
Selection combines the VITREE CBT score, marks in the qualifying degree (PG for Ph.D., UG for Direct Ph.D.), the research proposal, and performance in the Personal Interview.
No. Change of test venue, campus, date of interview or programme is not permitted after submission.
Ph.D. Internal Full Time: Rs. 40,000 per annum. Ph.D. External Part Time (Teachers): Rs. 60,000 per annum. Ph.D. External Part Time (Industry): Rs. 75,000 per annum. Direct Ph.D. and Ph.D. Deep Technology: Rs. 40,000 per annum each. A refundable Caution Deposit of Rs. 3,000 and a one-time Thesis Fee of Rs. 10,000 (paid at thesis submission) also apply.
The Thesis Fee of Rs. 10,000 is paid at the time of thesis submission only, not at the time of admission.
